Client Overview

Significant power-backup upgrades have taken place at three important healthcare and research facilities in Uganda. These projects included the research infrastructure at Makerere University Walter Reed Program (MUWRP), the Nakasero data centre, Laboratories, patient care at Fort Portal Regional Hospital, and essential services at Mulago Hospital’s laboratories. Each location received custom-designed Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) solutions from Tripplite by Eaton and Eaton, tailored to meet local load profiles and reliability needs.

Challenge

MUWRP’s Nakasero data centre supports high-throughput sample processing and secure data storage. Frequent voltage fluctuations and short blackouts jeopardized experiments and research records.

Solution

A Tripplite by Eaton 20kVA online UPS with double-conversion design was chosen. Its low transfer times and precise voltage regulation protected critical servers and storage arrays from disturbances.

Results

  • Confirmed 80 percent uptime for Servers, Laboratory Equipment, PCs, and network equipment during Power interruptions, High voltage, Low voltage, excessive voltage fluctuations, and Sags that can potentially be harmful to the hardware and software.
  • Clinical staff became more confident with clear status indicators and audible alarms.
  • Facility management and IT team set quarterly preventative maintenance schedules.

Conclusion

The custom UPS solutions from Eaton provided strong, reliable power backup across different healthcare and research settings in Uganda. Tailored load assessments, detailed commissioning procedures, and focused local training ensured that each site met its uptime and safety goals.

Next Steps and Additional Considerations

  • Explore modular UPS expansions to accommodate future equipment growth
  • Implement a centralized monitoring dashboard for all UPS units
  • Develop a regional spare parts inventory to reduce downtime during component failure
  • Schedule annual refresher training sessions and full-system drills with operational staff
